Rapid and precise profiling of acetylcholine (ACh) has become important for diagnosing diseases and safeguarding health care because of its pivotal role in the central nervous system. Herein, we developed a new colorimetric sensor based on protein–inorganic hybrid nanoflowers as artificial peroxidase, comprising a test kit and a smartphone reader, which sensitively quantifies ACh in human serum. In this sensor, ACh indirectly triggered the substrate reaction with the help of a multienzyme system including acetylcholinesterase, choline oxidase, and mimic peroxidase (nanoflowers), accompanying the enhancement of absorbance intensity at 652 nm. Therefore, the multienzyme platform can be used to detect ACh via monitoring the change of the absorbance in a range from 0.0005 to 6.0 mmol L–1. It is worth mentioning that the platform was used to prepare a portable agarose gel-based kit for rapid qualitative monitoring of ACh. Coupling with ImageJ program, the image information of test kits can be transduced into the hue parameter, which provides a directly quantitative tool to identify ACh. Based on the advantages of simple operation, good selectivity, and low cost, the availability of a portable kit for point-of-care testing will achieve the needs of frequent screening and diagnostic tracking. ...

The availability of potable water is one of the major concerns in many countries today. This brings in a need to design molecular scaffolds suitable for efficient adsorption of the contaminants present in water. In this paper, an unprecedented strategy is demonstrated in order to synthesize highly porous bovine serum albumin_Au (BSA_Au) beads and was employed for the removal of water contaminants. The beads stored in acidic medium (Beada) and in basic medium (Beadb) selectively adsorb anionic and cationic species that includes organic dyes and inorganic species, respectively, by showing a pH-responsive behavior. This phenomenon bestowed the beads with the recyclability and reusability as demonstrated for eight cycles wherein almost 100% efficiency is retained by the beads without any deterioration. The porous nature of these beads is retained even after switching the pH for several cycles of adsorption–desorption processes as judged based by the SEM data. Thus, the reported beads are demonstrated for their selective and efficient removal of both organic and inorganic contaminants from water wherein the beads can be recycled by triggering pH changes that would also release the captured species. The biologically benign beads act as reusable smart nanofactories in the purification of water from industrial contaminants. ...

Understanding how forces orchestrate tissue formation requires technologies to map internal tissue stress at cellular length scales. Here, we develop ultrasoft mechanosensors that visibly deform under less than 10 Pascals of cell-generated stress. By incorporating these mechanosensors into multicellular spheroids, we capture the patterns of internal stress that arise during spheroid formation. We experimentally demonstrate the spontaneous generation of a tensional 'skin', only a few cell layers thick, at the spheroid surface, which correlates with activation of mechanobiological signalling pathways, and balances a compressive stress profile within the tissue. These stresses develop through cell-driven mechanical compaction at the tissue periphery, and suggest that the tissue formation process plays a critically important role in specifying mechanobiological function. The broad applicability of this technique should ultimately provide a quantitative basis to design tissues that leverage the mechanical activity of constituent cells to evolve towards a desired form and function. ...
